Here's the start of my trip to Zanzibar... the rest will follow next time I have internet
Long bus journeys were a defining feature of my trip. The journey from Kampala to Dar Es Salaam was no exception,  smoke began billowing through into the coach when we were only an hour out of Kampala, so the driver pulled over to find out that the wheel was out of line, so the solution was first to jack the wheel off the ground, then later we stopped again and the wheel was just completely removed, so we did the next part of journey (to Nairobi) with 7 wheels rather than 8.

Switching buses in the middle of Nairobi, which (not surprisingly) caused a road block.

The cockrel that was hitching a ride into the centre of Dar.

Leaving Dar Es Salaam behind, thank god. Don't like that city.

the main form of transport on Zanzibar is by dala dala, we counted 35 people at one point on this journey

  2. My dear Kate,

Sorry I haven't been in touch for so long, have just been enjoying the lovely weather we have been having. It was lovely to have that nice long chat with you when I was staying in Bare.

Your latest photos and accompanying text was very interesting, not to mention impressive, as I said at the start of your Ugandan experience, I think it is all worthy of inclusion in The National Geographic and I think you should approach them on your return - it is definitely worth a try, don't you think?

I expect you are now feeling a little sad now that your time in Uganda is drawing to an end, it will be hard to leave behind all the lovely people that you have met, but you will come away with amazing memories that will last for ever and with the knowledge that it is always possible to return there one day, and no doubt you will be able to keep in touch with your 'family' and pupils after you return home.

Your Dad, Liz, Jack, Michelle and Jean all came down for my Birthday on the 28th, which was lovely, although the heatwave was over by then and the weather a bit more unsettled than it had been, but your Dad managed to have a couple of sailing trips with Jean, and Jack had a successful crabbing session (15 I think). On my Birthday, one of the members of Mixed Company was putting on a cream tea, she said it was O.K. for me to bring the family, so we all trooped over the Georgeham, near Croyde. It was nice enough to sit in the garden to eat and she had put on a lovely spread with lots of home made cake as well as the cream tea. After we had eaten, Michelle and Jean entertained everyone, by singing and playing guitar, which we all enjoyed and made the afternoon a bit special.

Michelle and Jean had to go back on Monday evening and Dad and Liz had to leave on Wednesday, in order for Liz to attend a school reunion on Friday. So they were only here for 4 days, which was a shame as it wasn't long enough to do much. But still it was great they were all able to make it. At the moment they are touring the west coast of Ireland with Louis and Jenny so I am sure they will be having a great time.

Well, Kate I am not sure of the date of your return, so maybe we will hear from you again before then, if not enjoy the remainder of your time there, stay safe, and I will look forward to talking to you when you get back.

    Love you lots Grandma xxx
